Mince Pie Perfection

Bakers and mince pie lovers have been given the perfect Christmas present this year courtesy of Samsung – the formula for the perfect mince pie!

In support of Samsung’s sponsorship of the Science Museum’s new Maths Gallery, Red Consultancy worked with keen cook and Professor of Pure Mathematics Dr Eugenia Cheng to investigate how far the influence of mathematics can be felt, even to the extent of creating a mathematically perfect mince pie!

Dr Cheng’s formula included the mathematical balance between pastry and mince, ensuring enough pie to maximise the filling and the perfect ratio of filling to pastry.

The story was supported with wider research into children’s attitudes to mathematics which revealed that the subject is often complex and frustrating for many children. The findings also showed that as a life-skill for adulthood, children were most likely to value the ability to cook as an important skill (78%) with mathematics closely behind (76%), leading to Samsung’s challenge to see if Dr Cheng’s could combine the two topics!
